COLLEGE CONNECTION TRIP 2016: JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

On April 13, 2016, a group of students from A. Mario Loiederman Middle     School participated in the second BKB Foundation sponsored College Connection Trip to Johns Hopkins University.

The day started with a DISC Leadership exercise that required the students to interact with each other and the host athletes. It worked as an excellent ice breaker, and was also a fun exercise for the students to learn a little bit about their characteristics and how they relate to leadership styles.

The students received a welcome and a message from Director of Athletics, Tom Calder, and then headed out to a Social Psychology class. The class was an excellent choice. The Professor was very engaging and the topic of the lecture (components of personal relationships) was one that the students could connect with, without being enrolled in the class for the entire semester. The lecture was in one of the larger lecture halls at the university and held a very large class. The professor even came by to see the group after the lecture to greet the students.

After the class, the students were treated to a tour of the university given by a student athlete who also was trained as a campus tour guide. She was very knowledgeable about the university and kept the group interested in all parts of the campus.  They were able to tour a dorm room in one of Hopkins Freshman dorms. After the tour, they were taken to the dining hall for lunch with the student athletes. There was a good bit of interaction between the group of students and several of the athletes during lunch.

After lunch, they had a tour of the athletic facilities, including the recreational sports facilities and the pool. They then visited the turf fields at Homewood as well as the baseball field. After the tour, the group got some down time in the Student Athlete Lounge and made posters for the lacrosse game. The students attended the lacrosse game at Homewood field before having a pizza party and departing for home.

It was a full day, but a very good day. At the end, when asked about the highlight of the day, the answers were detailed and varied across most of the events of the day.

A fun filled evening was had by all who attended the second BKB Bowling For Students Fundraiser in Manassas, VA on August 13, 2016. Stonewall Jackson High School was represented again this year, as well as Neelsville and Loiederman Middle Schools.

We want to thank Cathy and her staff at Bowl America Bull Run for the excellent service we received.  It was a pleasure to work with them again.

Two of Brian’s close friends, Doug Nelson and Vinny Cousineau, bowled “remotely” from Chicago on the day of the event.  They raised more than $1,000 to support the initiatives of the BKB Foundation.  Our heartfelt thanks go out to Doug and Vinny and everyone who sponsored them for the bowling fundraiser.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!  Let’s make the third BKB Bowling For Students Fundraiser the best ever.  We will let you know when a date has been set for next year, so everyone will have sufficient time for planning purposes.

Congratulations to Dede Gaba for being the recipient of the Brian K. Betts Memorial Scholarship at Watkins Mill High School.  Dede will be attending Towson University and plans to major in Early Childhood Education.

The BKB Foundation was pleased to award its annual scholarship at Stonewall Jackson High School to Kenneth Miller.  Kenneth will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall and plans on majoring in History.

An enjoyable evening was had by all at the BKB Foundation Bowling for Students Fundraiser in Manassas, Virginia on Saturday, May 30^th.  Cathy and her staff at Bowl America Bull Run are to be commended for accommodating all our requests and ensuring everything was done to our satisfaction.  It was a pleasure working with them!

The bowling fundraiser was a huge success and plans are in the making to do it again next year.   Everyone had an exciting evening bowling with family and friends.  Many of Stonewall Jackson High School alumni were there and Neelsville and Loiederman Middle Schools were also represented.

Another special thanks goes to Doug Nelson and John Pizzo who bowled “remotely” from Fort Lauderdale, FL.  They raised $820.00 for the BKB Foundation in support of scholarships and the College Connection program for middle school students in the DC metro area.  To all the individuals who sponsored Doug and John for this event, we thank you so very much.

We look forward to seeing everyone again next year and hope those who were unable to make it out this year, will come and join the fun next year!  Our hope is to grow this into an even bigger event for the BKB Foundation.
